'You’ll love Libby’s heartwarming journey as her life changes in ways she’d never have expected… A warm, light, brilliantly romantic story.’ 5/5 GirlsLovetoRead.com

A Barefoot Summer is a beautiful, touching story about coming home, the importance of family, and the special place that first loves hold in our hearts. Fans of Carole Matthews, Trisha Ashley, Susan Mallery and Susan Wiggs – and anyone looking for a perfect, feel-good summer read will enjoy this.

Sometimes you find perfect where you least expect it …

Libby Potter has just lost the perfect job, the perfect apartment and the perfect boyfriend. Moving back to the home town that she couldn’t wait to escape when she was younger was definitely not on her to-do list. Especially as it means running into the man whose heart she broke when she left.

Pete Bennett can still make Libby’s world stop with just the sound of his voice – even ten years on. Only now, she is the last person in the world that he wants to see.

As everyone else welcomes Libby home with open arms, she realizes she’s missed that special closeness that comes from lifelong friendship. And, as Libby seeks to make amends with Pete, she begins to wonder whether she made the right choice in leaving all those years ago.

When an amazing career opportunity gives her the chance to leave again, Libby will have to decide what her version of perfect is… and where she really belongs.

A Barefoot Summer was previously published as Love Me for Me.

What people are saying about A Barefoot Summer…

‘A perfect romance read. Full of tension and heart wrenching feelings that have you biting your lower lip in either frustration or sadness. Have a lump in your throat, a tear in your eye or giggling like a schoolgirl… Oh I really did enjoy it, I know this will be a turn to read when I need a relaxed paced read that is genuine, believable and beautiful. One to lift my mood and put a smile on my face and warmth in my heart.

Full of charismatic characters, family love and bonds, honesty, small town loveliness and soul mates. Reading perfection!’ 5/5 Pajama Book Girl

‘I loved the synopsis of Love Me for Me, it sounded like a heart-warming, romantic, enjoyable story and it was all of those things…plus a whole lot more…

I was really happy with the ending of this novel too, it was completely satisfying, everything was tied up and I found I had a big cheesy grin on my face when I finished. You’ll love Libby’s heartwarming journey as her life changes in ways she’d never have expected…

It’s a novel that will get you thinking and feeling appreciative for what you have in life. You might also end up asking yourself ‘What If…’ about situations of your own. A warm, light, brilliantly romantic story.’ 5/5 GirlsLovetoRead.com

‘What a journey! I can't recommend this book enough - it's a book that will keep you guessing right up until the final pages - a book that isn't all hearts and flowers yet has left me feeling happy and content, perfect!’ 5/5 Crooks on Books

‘This was a delightful read. It isn’t a heavy plot so it is ideal if you are looking for something light to whisk you away to an idyllic setting and a cast of lovely characters.’ Rea Book Review

"It took me about 21 chapters to get into this book. If anything, I am persistent. I alwAys try to give the books I read the benefit of the doubt. It was super slow to me compared to the other books she has written. I loved the one with the doctor but I can't remember the name off the top of my head. It caught me right from the get go. I was kind of hoping this would do the same. Nope. But it was a good read."

A Barefoot Summer A feel good romance to read in the sun Jenny Hale Books Reviews

  • I am utterly surprised at all of the positive reviews for this book. I am a self-declared romance-aholic (not a word, but whatever). I will read anything, written by anyone. But I could barely finish this book because it annoyed me at every page. I have never, and I do mean never, after reading 100s of romance novels, ever wanted to slap a hero or heroine in a book as much I did here.

Libby, who is nearly 30, is completely irritating, in the sense that she feels the need to apologize, repeatedly, for things she said as an 18 YEAR OLD. She returns to her small, hometown, after things go awry for her in the Big City. She doesn't want to return home, but has no choice after losing her job, and subsequently, her fiancé.

The premise of the book got me looped in "girl returns home after 10+ years, and everyone is happy to see her except the man she left behind." However, there was something about the hero, Pete, that rubbed me wrong from the start, and he never recovered. He was downright nasty to Libby, holding a grudge so deep about the fact she called the town "insignificant" before she left and went to college. Oh no, not "insignificant"! Because I've read so many books, the conflict or issue upon which this novel rests was so ridiculous. Girl leaves home pregnant, and doesn't tell the father. That's an issue. Girl leaves home with boyfriend's brother. That's an issue. Girl leaves small-town USA, goes to Ivy League school because she wants to better herself. Not an issue. At least not one that the hero can spend the entire book making her feel terrible about.

It wasn't until the final pages of the book, the Epilogue, where Pete actually says he loves her. Pete just came across as a total *sshole, and I couldn't like him. Libby made mistakes! But should all of us be held to the people we were when we were 18? I don't think so.

The only reason this book didn't get one star from me is because I really can see that she has the gift of story-telling. Personally, I won't chance purchasing another book of hers, only to be have to throw my iPad across the room after every page. But I share this feedback in the hopes that it will help someone wavering with purchasing this book. The hero never acts, for any length of time, like he really cares for Libby. And that grated on me.

  • I enjoyed reading Jenny Hale's books, but I found myself getting annoyed by Libby's neurotic behavior. As I continued to read, I found myself thinking about what life was like at thirty. People! Pleasing, Ego, Still finding our way, Confident, yet insecure. When I traveled back there, I got a real appreciation for the story Jenny was writing. She did a wonderful job of bringing out the characters emotions, and the challenges of relationships. When Jenny began to appreciate the challenges her mother faced, and the manner in which she was raised, this story evolved into understanding that parents do the best they can, with what they know. I would recommend this. book for readers 25 +.
  • I loved Hale’s other books such as Summer House and her Christmas reads. This was a painfully boring saga of a selfish immature women’s metaphorsis influenced by other characters almost as immature. As much of the story is an emotional journey of a character I didn’t particularly like I found it exhausting,
  • What a lovely story. Thanks Jenny Hale again. I now have read all of your books and cannot wait for a new one. This story of Libby was so wonderful how she found her way back again to a place she thought she never wanted to be. Wonderful read.
  • I liked the book enjoying the lives of the people of the small town. Easy read. What I would refer to as a good beach book. I'm from a small town where everyone grew up together and knew each other well. I even married my high school sweetheart. Been married 50 years. I enjoy books about mystery; drama; the Amish. But I too so enjoy just reading a lighthearted story even though I'm all but ensured of a happy ending.
  • A Barefoot Summer was a good weekend/beach book to read. It did not totally wow me but I enjoyed it. The book was about Libby who left her home town and love to follow her dream in the big city but in the end found what was really important, friends, family, love and home.
  • This was a very good read. The characters were well developed and interesting. It had a good story line.
