"I have the jingle jazz book too. It is just okay. I feel like you cannot really hear the melodies. It is arranged far from the original melody. I just wanted my family to hear Christmas sings with a new twist. Not some songs that no one knows what I'm playing. I think the music is well written and had enough challenge but just not what I was looking for."

Christmas Medleys The Phillip Keveren Series The Phillip Keveren Series Piano Solo Phillip Keveren 9781423426738 Books Reviews

  • These are wonderful late intermediate/early advanced level piano solos. Sumptuous, accessible, not too hard, and just right for the workhorse holiday pianist who has to drum up something nice for recitals, senior living centers, church, and holiday parties. Keveren's arrangements use glamorous chords and voicings to produce pieces that sound by turns grand, celestial, adventurous and nostalgic, and the arrangements are fully realized and developed, using the medleys as launching off points to create emotional experiences. I appreciate Keveren's willingness to borrow from other keys, to modulate with panache to create unusual effects, and his playfulness with duple and triple times, sometimes linking songs by putting them both into triple and then breaking aside for a moment to dabble in duple in order to articulate the character of the mood at that time. These sound like a mashup between the sweet pop of Jim Brickman and the cinematic grandeur of John Williams.
  • I fully understand the concept of arranging but agree with Ktina that these solos are "over-arranged." I am quite familiar with Phillip Keveren's work and was expecting heavily arranged music, but there is so much added "ginger bread" that you lose track of the main melody. If you want Christmas music that sounds like Christmas music choose a different arranger or plan on arranging the arrangement yourself.
  • I have the jingle jazz book too. It is just okay. I feel like you cannot really hear the melodies. It is arranged far from the original melody. I just wanted my family to hear Christmas sings with a new twist. Not some songs that no one knows what I'm playing. I think the music is well written and had enough challenge but just not what I was looking for.
  • Beautiful medleys, creatively arranged. My family really enjoys listening to these as I play them. Even the dogs come into the room and listen!
  • Well written. Have enjoyed playing the songs. Using the music for church Christmas programs. Great for advanced beginner or early intermediate.
  • Great book--beautiful arrangements. They are at an early advanced or late intermediate level.
  • I choose to give this book a 5 star rating because its quality is equal to "i love it". Its such a fantastic book and depending on the level you are at its very challenging. I recommend this book to students that are at a level 4-5, it may be difficult for them, but it is a great learning tool to gain knowledge of higher level skill. The selection of pieces in this book are also very unique and some are the classic Christmas carols you cant go without learning. All in all i believe this book is a winner.
  • I like this book of piano selections. It allows the player to not work hard at sightreading, yet it sounds good. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to expand his or her Christmas piano library.
